Christos Carras

Christos Carras, born and raised in London, studied philosophy at Cambridge and completed a PhD in aesthetics of contemporary music in Paris before moving to Greece in 1990. After working in the  wine sector, he gradually returned to the cultural field, contributing to European music networks and later serving at the Theocharakis Foundation. From 2009 to 2022, he was Executive Director of the Onassis Stegi, where he engaged deeply with contemporary Greek artistic production, its priorities and international connections.

His recent work focuses on sustainability in the cultural sector, arguing that museums must move beyond isolated “quick wins” and instead integrate sustainability into governance, processes and long-term strategy. Climate action, circularity, education, social justice and community engagement must be seen as interconnected.

From the Benaki Museum collection he selects a simple Early Cycladic marble bowl, which he finds emotionally powerful for its material purity and timelessness. For him, its minimal form bridges millennia, symbolizing both Greek heritage and the continuity of global human culture.

Carras encourages visitors not only to admire Greece’s ancient monuments but also to explore its vibrant contemporary creativity, which reflects today’s concerns through a distinct local lens.
