Maria Papadimitriou
Maria Papadimitriou
Maria Papadimitriou is a Greek artist whose practice spans sculpture, installation, painting, video and socially engaged art. Her work investigates collective memory, gendered bodies, myth and the politics of trauma. Although born in Athens, she moves constantly between the local and the global, teaching at the University of Thessaly and creating socially oriented projects such as TAMA, Souzy Tros, and the Victoria Square Project (with Rick Lowe). She sees herself as a witness and mediator who listens to communities, gathers their stories and recomposes them through art.
Her upcoming project, “The Disappointment of Utopia”, draws on Greek and Italian folk-Christian traditions. Inspired by the ex-voto tama, she creates two-meter aluminum sculptures dedicated to healing—of both the earth and human experience—while also reflecting on Greece’s recurring cycles of utopian hope and crisis.
From the Benaki Museum she chooses the rosette, a symbol of rebirth, light, femininity and eternity, which she reads as a hopeful offering for the future. She highlights the Benaki Museum’s role in fostering experimental contemporary Greek art and sustaining its dialogue with global artistic questions.
